Coach Blake

Blake Becker is a USA Triathlon Level I Certified Coach who has an Undergraduate Degree in Education from the University of Wisconsin – Stevens Point. He has been coaching since 2002, while also pursuing his own athletic excellence as a professional athlete.

Blake first got into triathlon back in the year 2000, when he was a 19 year old, over eager and “bigger” college student. His passion quickly grew into a lifestyle and he became a student of many different training philosophies. Throughout the seasons, Blake has implemented most of these programs into his own training and has first hand experience with the results. His biggest influences include Joe Friel, Mark Allen, Gordo Byrn, and Jack Daniels.

As an age group athlete, Blake was ranked as an All-American 4 years in a row (2002-2006). He has several overall wins, both as an age-grouper and professional. While he enjoys competing at all distances, his passion is Ironman. By the end of the 2007 season; he will have competed in 10 Ironman races.

"My coaching is very individualized. No two athletes are the same; therefore their training programs should not be either. I take the principles that I know work and integrate them into a schedule that will work for each athlete and their life."

"My coaching is designed to help each athlete reach their potential, while taking family, work and other social commitments into account."

"If you are interested in a coach that will not only educate you, but also motivate you to succeed and enjoy this sport, then you have come to the right place."

After reading numerous training books on running, triathlons, and nutrition, I found myself pretty much overwhelmed and "shot-gunning" my approach to various athletic events such as the marathons and sprint triathlons. Though I had a decent idea of how to train and was achieving decent results, I felt a strong desire to raise the bar and follow a more comprehensive approach that only an experienced professional coach could provide. After signing up to compete in my first Ironman (Ironman-Wisconsin 2006), I decided I needed get serious about how I trained, what I ate, how I prepared, and the plan I would follow. Ironman is too great of a goal I thought, to let it slip by without sufficient guidance and coaching.

After interviewing numerous candidates to be my coach, I found Blake to be a perfect match for my needs. What I did need was a training coach and mentor. Someone to put a more structured outline and plan together that would help me reach new levers. I also needed someone to work with my current abilities to enhance them, as well as help continue to balance my athletic, personal, and family lives.

In 9 months in working with Blake, I had successfully completed one sprint triathlon, one Olympic triathlon, two 1/2 Ironman races, two endurance bike races, three 10K races, and one marathon. Blake effectively outlined plan that would allow me to accomplish these races, yet still recover, rest, and fit in the needed quality family time. I knew I was on the right path when I obtained top 20% results in my first two half Ironman races, as well as a top 10% result in my first Olympic triathlon!

Blake brings unmatched enthusiasm in the sport that is obvious from the start. His experience as a coach and professional contacts across the country, provide him endless resources to customize a successful training plan for nearly any type of athlete.

I would highly recommend Blake as a coach. If my first Ironman time is any indicator of Blake's knowledge and understanding, he is an excellent choice. I finished Ironman-Wisconsin, one of the most brutal Ironman races ever, in 12:02 (508/2439 overall; 113/411 in M35-39 age group). For a first time Ironman participant, I would say those results pretty much speak for themselves. Thanks Blake for helping me reach my goals!

I joined up with Blake in May of 2005. I talked to him about my lack of progress since my inception into triathlon two years earlier. Sure, I had posted some strong finishes, but I was stuck in a rut where I was not getting any better. Blake had started coaching a few years back and had progressed in leaps and bounds over the last couple of years. We talked and agreed to work together.

My training became much more structured and I am more rested when I need to be. Blake integrated aspects of training that I had never thought of or even heard of before. He has great resources and is able to pass along a lot of information, which he is then able to work into my training program.

Over the last two seasons I have had some great results, or which I credit to Blake, as he strives to make me the best athlete I can be. I am looking forward to continuing my coaching relationship with Blake in the years to come and the excellent results that will follow.

I first met Blake at a triathlon clinic held in the Madison area and found him to be very knowledgeable in the sport of triathlons. While attending Blake’s triathlon clinic I decided I wanted to give triathlons a shot. Because I had very little background in swimming and biking, I felt that I needed a coach to help me get started. With Blake as my coach, I began training in February of 2007.

As of August 2007, only seven months after I first started training with Blake, I have successfully completed three sprint triathlons, one Olympic triathlon, one 1/2 Ironman triathlon and a marathon. Thanks to Blake I have always felt well prepared and equipped with race day strategies I am confident about. Blake is a very successful professional triathlete, but maintains the ability to relate to beginner and experienced triathletes alike.

To this day, Blake answers all of my questions in a timely manner and has taught me the importance of heart rate, nutrition, rest and mental toughness. All of my training plans follow the same general format, which provide me with a structured, predictable routine that is easy to follow and understand. Having said this, the plans also provide diversity and variety so I do not feel burned out by the training.

Blake has really helped me discover my love for triathlons and my goal for next season is to compete in Ironman Wisconsin. With Blake as my coach, I know I will be well prepared on race day!
